  Plan of Study

A Plan of Study is the road map for your degree program. Graduation will be contingent upon approval of the formal Plan of Study that will be created for you electronically in the HokieSpa student record system by the VTMIT department.

The graduate school requires a plan of study be entered by the program department by the time the student has completed fifteen credit hours of coursework. You may use the Plan of Study document to make tentative plans for your graduate program. It will be important to give consideration to course prerequisites and to projected course offering schedules.

Prerequisites

An approved Java prerequisite course (or SUN certification) must be completed prior to enrollment in the VTMIT foundation course, CS5044. An online course that meets this requirement is ITP 120, Java Programming I, specifically offered through Virginia Western Community College. It is tailored to VTMIT students needing preparation for CS5044. See http://www.vw.vccs.edu/bussci/ist/vt/itp120vt.htm for more information. If you plan to take another course, you will need to obtain VTMIT approval in advance of enrolling.

The following VTMIT courses do not have prerequisite course requirements and therefore a newly-admitted VTMIT student may enroll in one of them prior to or while completing the Java prerequisite course (see list of approved courses).

  • MGT5804 - Strategic Leadership in Technology-Based Organizations
  • ECE 4500 - Fundamentals of Computer Systems

  • Sequencing

VTMIT students enrolled in the master’s degree usually complete ten courses in less than three years. Individual certificates available within the degree consist of three to four courses depending on the module area. The VTMIT program was designed for working professionals who, as part-time students, enroll in one or two courses per semester.

Use the following prerequisite information to determine the proper sequence for taking courses in the program. Completing course prerequisites and taking courses in the prescribed order ensures students are properly prepared for advanced coursework. Course offerings projected through Spring semester 2006 are shown on the course list and can be used as a tentative guide. Questions about course prerequisites and scheduling should be directed to the VTMIT Advisor at vtmitinfo@vt.edu or 703-538-8384.

    Communication Systems Module:
The foundation courses for the Communications Module are ECE4500. Both must be completed prior to taking Communication Systems Module courses (ECE5654 and ECE5984).

    Networking Module:
A calculus-based Probability and Statistics course is a prerequisite (undergraduate, usually available in Engineering schools; Business and Liberal Arts programs do not usually teach Probability and Statistics in a calculus-based format.) If you have not taken such a course while an undergraduate student, one of the following three options Northern Virginia will satisfy the requirement: NVCC MTH243, GMU STAT344, VT STAT4714. ECE4500 must be completed prior to taking Networking Module courses (ECE/CS5565 and ECE/CS5566).

    Computer Engineering Module:
ECE4500 must be completed prior to taking Computer Engineering Module courses (ECE5504 and ECE5514).

    Software Development Module:
CS5044 and CS5704 are prerequisites for the Software Development courses ( CS5244, and CS5744).

    Business Information Systems Module:
CS5044 and CS5704 are the prerequisites for ACIS5504. ACIS5504 must be taken before ACIS5524. VTMIT students are strongly encouraged to complete all VTMIT Foundation courses (CS5044, CS5704, ECE4500 and MGT5804) prior to enrollment in BIS module courses.

    Decision Support Systems Module:
CS5044 and CS5704 are prerequisites for BIT5474 ,BIT5495 and BIT5594. VTMIT students are strongly encouraged to complete all VTMIT Foundation courses (CS5044, CS5704, ECE4500 and MGT5804) prior to enrollment in DSS module courses.
